This month we feature the Ugandan Rolex — a delicious, easy-to-make street food that, despite its relatively recent invention, has swept across Uganda to become a national favorite. Loved by both locals and visitors, it's the ultimate go-to snack.
Our Book of the Month is Crooked Plow by Itamar Vieira Junior, set in the rarely visited rural areas of Bahia, Brazil, where subsistence farmers confront the lingering consequences of a global history they did not create.
And for our international music selection, Paris Cafe offers a romantic musical journey with timeless French classics filled with love and passion.
This week brings a wide-ranging mix of cross-cultural events across San Diego, with something to pique almost every interest. The inaugural Artival Art Festival makes its debut, the House of the Philippines will host their annual lawn program at the cottages, and the San Diego County Fair opens next Wednesday in Del Mar. While the fair is a lively celebration of Americana — ranging from the sublime to the delightfully quirky — it also features a sprawling lineup of concerts and an abundance of international and regional comfort foods, with a heavy emphasis on indulgent, food-truck-style fare. Looking ahead, the St. Spyridon Greek Festival and numerous Juneteenth celebrations are just around the corner.
This weekend is especially rich with concerts and special music events. The renowned Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival returns to Poway, alongside performances spanning Flamenco, Indian Classical, Persian, Reggae, Mexican Regional, and Latin American Classical traditions. On Sunday, Yale Strom’s annual Klezmer Summit will take place at the First UU, and next Wednesday, the Sabrosas Latin Orchestra will perform at the Conrad Prebys Center.
For film enthusiasts, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time will be screened at the Digital Gym, and the Italian Film Festival will conclude its current season with Orlando at La Paloma.
Theater continues to shine at the forefront of cross-cultural expression, with productions including Don Quixote (Ballet), Jasper in Deadland (Musical), Jaja's African Hair Braiding, The Mountaintop, House of India, One of the Good Ones, Latin History for Morons, White Guy on the Bus, All’s Well That Ends Well, Thinking Shakespeare Live, and Indian Princess. Several of these are wrapping up this weekend, so time is of the essence!
Lastly, this weekend also brings the Opening Art Reception for the new exhibit Letras y Pinturas at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center.

Deep in Brazil's neglected Bahia hinterland, two sisters find an ancient knife beneath their grandmother's bed and, momentarily mystified by its power, decide to taste its metal.
